This piece is a self-portrait. I’ve painted myself into a cloyingly cheerful yellow room. Bracing myself with a firm grip on my purse, I try to reflect and project cheerfulness. This is my disposition at work, where I have been told I am a “ray of sunshine” even on days when I felt like a rainstorm. It made me realize I put on a costume each day to go out into the world and hold it all together.
